I read an interview with Actor Kevin Bacon today. He mentioned the one film that he did with the late Mr. Hughes, "She's having a baby". That film is almost never mentioned in Mr. Hughes body of work. Since it wasn't a big money maker, it is called a "Misfire" .
Mr. Bacon understood that it was Mt. Hughes's personal film, The film that talked about how he went from a kid, wanting to play all the time, to being a man. I love that film. And as much as I liked "16 Candles" and most of his other work, "She's having a baby" was Mr. Hughes best film.
Thank you sir. You will be missed.

Ike and Joe. Driven to Succeed
Now that the Michael Jackson funeral and Hype show has died down for a bit. Let’s talk about ambitions for a bit.
During all the Jackson hubbub, the one person that seemed to come in for the most scorn was the Jackson Family patriarch, Joe Jackson. The reasons were as varied as the person speaking, but, they all came down to “Joe Jackson was a mean S.O.B. to his family!, That’s what made Michael into the person he was!”
I will admit that the senior Jackson may not have made the finals of “Best Dad In The World”, But Joe Jackson took his family for living in Gary Ind. to world wide fame. In fact if it hadn’t been for the senior Jackson’s ambition, Michael would not have become “The King of POP”.
Joe Jackson and Ike Turner, both have gotten a bad rap in popular culture. Ike took his lumps with the film “What’s love got to do with it?” Now don’t get me wrong, Ike was a wife beating, drug addict. Those stories were around long before Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett acted them out on the big screen. I recall one talking to a slip of a girl, whose entire knowledge of Ike & Tina Turner came from that film. She prattled on about what a great artist Tina was and what a low life Ike was. I had to tell her, that if it hadn’t been for Ike’s drive and ambition. Anna Mae Bullock (Tina Turner’s real name) would still be singing in the church choir he first heard her.
So Cut Joe some slack! Without him, Michal Jackson would never have died looking like a shriveled up white woman.

That's LOVE addition
While giving this idea of "Love & Firearms more thought, I remembered the Song / Film "Frankie & Johnny" ( staring Elvis Presley and Donna Douglas) and the case of Jean Harris & Dr. Herman Tarnower. In both cases, women expressed their Love for their man by shooting him.
Frankie shot Johnny with a .44, because Johnny was "Stepping out" on her with Nellie Bly
The "Scarsdale Diet" Doctor was having it off with quite a few women until Mrs. Harris asserted her claim on him with a .38.
Ah Love!

"That's Love!"
On the day the former Tennessee Titan Quaterback Steve McNair will have his memorial Service, I just want to say a word about "LOVE".
As we know, McNair was shot 4 times by his 20 year old Mistress, and then she shot herself.
Now that's LOVE!
Examining my life, I have never been in love with a woman that loved me enough to take a shot at me. Most of the woman that I have loved would never have wasted the ammo on me. But, this woman pooped him twice in the chest and twice in the head and then shot herself!
Where are those kind of women?

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. A QUESTION
From time to time, TCM runs the feature, "How to read a movie". In it, they talk about how a film is made and how you can "read" a film like a book. Inthis post, I want to talk about an aspect of this film that isn't spoken of, the trial of Tom Robinson.
Tom,accused of sexual assault on the "White Trash" Mayella, is defended by the noble Atticus Finch. Lawyer Finch does a masterful job of defending his client by showing in court that due to an accident to his left arm, Tom couldn't have attacked Mayella. And then Atticus departs from the facts and starts to talk about the reason for this case is because Mayella "Tempted a Negro".
I contend that in his summation, Atticus Finch helped convict his client. Finch, did not keep the juries attention on the Facts! By appealing to their emotions, he made them come to the defense of a "white woman attacked by a N*****". at that point, Tom may as well have bolted from the courtroom and started his last desperate run for freedom. Finch helped convict his client.
If you accept my opinion, Maybe Atucus Finch isn't the hero we thought of.
I await your Opinions and comments.

Welcome back!
I let this blog fall into disrepair. I started this thing as an experiment for the company I was working for. Nw. I'm not sure what I want to do with it.. For the moment, I'll post some of the things that I also post ay the TCM Film Union. My thoughts on Classic Movies.
Please tell me what you think.
Three Comrades or Who couldn’t be in love with Margaret Sullivan?
Stephen Ambrose in his book “Band of Brothers” , wrote about comrades. “Comrades are closer that friends, Closer than Brothers, their relationship is different that lovers. Their trust and knowledge of each other is Total.
Those words came ringing through to me when I saw the film Three Comrades recently. The story revolves around 3 soldiers, late of the German Army of World War One. Otto (Franchot Tone), Gottfried, (Robert Young) and Eric (Robert Taylor), had seen the worst of the war and were now living the worst of the peace. The Germany they came home to was in political turmoil and economic depression. But, the Comradeship that got them through the war, held them together in these tough times. They meet Pat (Margaret Sullivan) and her profiteer boyfriend at Eric’s birthday Celebration and Eric and Pat fall in love. At the same time, I fall in love with Margaret Sullivan too.
The Magisterial Robert Osborne once said in a introduction to the film (“The Mortal Storm”, I think) James Stewart said he fell in love with Margaret Sullivan every time he worked with her. You couldn’t help it. In Black & White, Margaret Sullivan was the woman you wanted to protect, and love and take care of. In the role of Pat, She was sort of a “Party Girl”. But when she meets Eric the youngest of our 3 comrades. She is wise in the ways of the world, He is rather naïve and that is what makes them a pair. His friends help him in this romance, and they too fall in love with her.
Pat and Erich marry, Soon, we find out what made her a “Party Girl”, She has Tuberculosis. On their Honeymoon, she has a near fatal attack. Eric calls his friends and they come through. Gottfried locates her doctor; Otto drives the doctor to the resort through bad roads and fog to save her. Instead of getting married to one man she has 3 of them looking after her.
She recovers, but, “Her Boys” are working harder to support her in a Germany is sliding further into political and finical chaos. They send Pat off to a sanitarium that can’t afford. The boys sell their business to keep Pat there. A sniper kills Gottfried during a political demonstration. Now Otto and Eric are supporting her. Not complaining, in fact willing to make any sacrifices for her. Otto finds Gottfried murderer and kills him. Now Pat’s care had put them in the deeper in debt. The Boys sell their last major possession to pay for it. She then takes control of the situation and …….well I’ll let you see the film.
I’m like Mr. Stewart, Who couldn’t be in love with a woman like that.
I await you thoughts and comments.
